Choosing a Shingle That Can Actually Handle DFW Weather

Dallas–Fort Worth roofs deal with a strange combination: baking summer heat, sudden hailstorms, and enough wind to test any shingle’s rating. Not every shingle on the shelf is built for that combination, so here’s what actually matters when you’re picking a replacement.

Impact resistance ratings matter more than the brand name

Shingles carry a UL 2218 impact resistance rating from Class 1 to Class 4, based on how they hold up when struck by steel balls simulating hail. Class 4 is the highest rating and the one worth asking for in DFW specifically. Some insurance carriers in Texas also offer a premium discount for Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, so it’s worth asking your agent whether upgrading actually lowers your ongoing premium before you decide it costs too much.

Wind rating for spring storm season

Shingles are also rated for wind resistance, typically in the 110 to 130 mph range for architectural (dimensional) shingles, versus lower ratings for basic three-tab shingles. Given how often DFW sees straight-line winds ahead of a storm front, the wind rating is not a spec to skip past — it affects whether shingles lift or stay put during the storm that also brings the hail.

Heat matters as much as hail

Texas summers bake a roof for months at a time, which accelerates the breakdown of cheaper asphalt formulations and can void certain warranties if the shingle isn’t rated for the exposure. Reflective or ‘cool roof’ shingle options can also modestly reduce attic temperatures, which matters more here than in most parts of the country.

What we actually install

We work with GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed, all of which offer Class 4 impact-rated lines suited to North Texas conditions. Which one makes sense for your home usually comes down to your specific insurance carrier’s discount structure, your budget, and the look you want — not a single objectively ‘best’ shingle. When we do your free inspection, we’ll walk through the options that fit your roof and your situation rather than pushing one line by default.

Ready to compare shingles for your own roof? We spec every option on our DFW roof replacement jobs, and a free drone inspection will tell you whether replacement or hail damage repair makes more sense.
