What hail damage actually looks like

Most hail damage doesn’t look catastrophic from the ground. What you’re looking for, up close: bruised shingles (a soft spot the size of a dime, often without a visible mark), granule loss exposing the asphalt mat, cracked or split shingles, and damage to vents, flashing, and gutters. Leaks are not always visible immediately after a storm, so prompt documentation can create a useful dated record of roof conditions.

Claim notice deadlines

Insurance policies can contain notice, reporting, and filing requirements. If you suspect storm damage, document it promptly and review your own policy or contact your carrier regarding applicable deadlines. Deadlines and coverage requirements vary by policy. Document suspected damage promptly and review your policy or contact your carrier for guidance. No obligation either way.

How our inspection works

We fly an EagleView-certified drone over your roof, capture full-resolution imagery of every plane, and identify hail strikes against shingle wear and natural defects. You get a written report — annotated photos, diagrams, severity rating — the same day. If your roof is in good shape, we tell you that and you keep the report on file. If we document possible storm damage, you can keep the report for your records and share it with your carrier.

If the hail is isolated to one or two slopes and the rest of the roof is sound, the honest answer is often a targeted repair instead of a full replacement.

Insurance claim documentation, no pressure

If you decide to file, we can provide dated drone imagery, measurements, a written contractor estimate, and supporting construction documentation for your records and carrier. The homeowner files and controls the claim; Texan Roofworks does not negotiate coverage or claim settlements.

Hail size and what it actually does

Size is not the whole story, but it is the starting point. Pea and marble sized hail rarely does structural harm to a healthy asphalt roof, though it can strip granules on a roof that is already near the end of its life. Quarter to golf ball sized hail is where bruising starts showing up consistently on three-tab and older architectural shingles, and where soft metal — gutter aprons, vent hoods, turbine caps, HVAC fins — starts taking visible dents. Above that, damage is usually obvious from the ground.

Wind speed, hail density, the angle of the storm and the age of the shingle all change the outcome, which is why two houses on the same street can come out of the same storm in completely different shape. That is also why a report on your specific roof is worth more than a size number off a weather map.

Why hail damage is easy to miss from the ground

A hail bruise is a fracture in the shingle mat under the surface. It does not always break the surface, so from the driveway the roof can look untouched. What you are actually looking for is a soft spot you can feel, granules collected at the bottom of downspouts, and matching dents on the soft metal around the roof. The interior symptom — a stain on a ceiling — tends to show up six to twelve months later, long after most people have stopped connecting it to the storm.

Our drone inspection covers every plane at consistent altitude and resolution, and a trained roofing professional reviews the imagery. That combination is what makes a bruise on a north-facing slope you cannot see from anywhere on your property show up in a photo with a date on it.

Repair, replace, or leave it alone

Three outcomes come out of a hail inspection. Sometimes the roof is fine and the right move is to keep the report on file so you have a dated baseline if there is another storm. Sometimes the damage is isolated — a slope, a ridge line, some flashing — and a targeted roof repair is the honest answer. And sometimes the field is bruised across every plane, the shingle is discontinued, or the roof was already near the end of its life, and a full roof replacement is what the photos support.

You get the reasoning in writing either way, with the imagery attached, so you are not taking anyone’s word for it.

What we do and what we do not do

We document roof damage, provide a detailed contractor estimate, meet with the carrier’s adjuster when requested, and complete the approved roofing work. When additional construction items are discovered or documented, we can provide the carrier with a contractor estimate and supporting documentation. We are a roofing contractor, not a public adjuster — the decision to file and what to accept stays with you and your carrier. For a real claim dispute, a licensed Texas Public Insurance Adjuster or an attorney is the right resource, and we will tell you when we think you are at that point. More on the process is on our insurance claim help page.
