How to Tell If Your Roof Has Hail Damage (Before It Becomes a Leak)

Most DFW homeowners don’t find out their roof took hail damage until they see a stain on the ceiling. By then, the shingles have usually been compromised for months. Here’s what to actually look for, and why the damage is so easy to miss from the ground.

Why hail damage hides from a ground-level look

Asphalt shingles are made of a fiberglass mat coated in asphalt and covered with protective granules. Hail doesn’t need to crack a shingle to damage it — a hard enough impact bruises the mat underneath and knocks granules loose, exposing the asphalt to UV light. From the driveway, or even standing at the gutter line, a bruised shingle can look completely normal. The damage shows up months or years later as a soft spot, a crack, or a leak, usually after the exposed asphalt has already started breaking down.

Signs you can actually check for yourself

You don’t need to get on the roof to do a basic check, and we’d rather you didn’t — a compromised roof isn’t a safe place to be walking around. From the ground, look at your gutters and downspouts after a storm for a buildup of granules that looks like coarse, colored sand. Check any metal roof vents, flashing, or window screens for small dents, since soft metal dents more visibly than shingles and is a good indicator hail was large enough to cause damage. Inside the house, keep an eye out for new water stains on ceilings, especially after heavy rain, which often show up weeks after the storm that actually caused the damage.

Why a professional inspection catches what you can’t

The reliable way to check every shingle is to actually look at every shingle up close, which is where a drone inspection earns its keep. It lets us photograph the entire roof surface in detail without anyone climbing on a potentially damaged deck, and it gives your insurance adjuster dated, specific documentation instead of a verbal description. If you had hail in your area recently and you’re not sure whether it’s worth a look, a free inspection costs you nothing and tells you definitively whether you have a claim worth filing.

You do not have to climb up there yourself. A free AI drone roof inspection gives you a same-day damage report, and if the hits are real we handle both the hail damage repair and the insurance claim.

Wondering about filing deadlines, deductibles, or what happens if a claim gets denied? Those are the questions we field most often, and we answer them on our roofing FAQ page.
